On Saturday night November 6, 2021, Super Middleweight supremacy will be at stake when Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KO’s) takes on Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (21-0, 12 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo is the current WBA/WBC/WBO/ and Ring Magazine Champion and is recognized by many as the top pound for pound fighter in the sport. Plant is the current IBF Champion and the last obstacle between Canelo and history.
Going into this fight Plant is a huge underdog, and rightfully so. I mean Canelo is considered the top fighter in the sport for a reason. That does not mean Plant does not have a chance. Plant possesses elite hand and foot speed, and a very good jab. Before he was stopped, Billy Joe Saunders was able to momentarily trouble Canelo by using said hand and foot speed. The problem is while that was working for a time, Saunders could not hurt Canelo enough to keep him off him. Plant much like Saunders is not known for his punching power, but if (and it’s a big if) he can keep Canelo honest, he gives himself a chance to win the fight.
Canelo on the other hand is operating in rarified air at the moment. Speaking personally, he is in that Roy Jones Jr., Floyd Mayweather Jr. mold where I am simply not picking against him. His skillset is complete as complete can get. He has power, speed, defense, and a high ring IQ to boot. Plant presents a challenge to Alvarez, but not one he has not seen before. As previously stated, Saunders and Plant present similar styles, and much like in baseball if you throw a power hitter the same pitch too many times he will time it and hit it out of the park.
I think Caleb Plant has a chance. It is a small one but it’s there. Canelo at this moment, however, is just too damn good to bet against.
My Prediction: Canelo Alvarez TKO Round 9
