Gervonta Davis Moves Up and Stops Mario Barrios in Action-Packed Fight
The 4th of July is still a week away, but Gervonta Davis and Mario Barrios provided plenty of fireworks on Saturday. “Tank” was jumping up two weight classes and facing a challenging and undefeated titleholder. He was a 5-1 favorite, but someone must have forgotten to tell Barrios. The fight was extremely close over the first six rounds. In the latter half of the fight, Davis’s power proved to be the difference in the bout. Barrios was landing well, but Tank was landing and dealing out more punishment. Round eight “Tank” put Barrios down twice and was looking to end the fight there.
Credit Barrios for getting up, and surviving. During round, nine he seemed to have gotten his bearings back, trying to keep Davis at bay with his height and reach. Barrios tried, but ultimately the punching power of Davis was too much and the action was halted at 2:13 in the eleventh round. With the win, Davis is now the WBA “Regular” Super-Lightweight Champion and is now a three-division champion.
